Vicar's Musings for the Fifth Sunday of Easter
24 April, 2016
This morning I have been invited, as Area Dean, by Fr Stuart Soley to preach at the Patronal Festival of St Mark's, Fitzroy. My thanks to Bp Graeme and Fr Philip for looking after the worship services at St Peter's in my absence. At 9.30am Family Mass today we welcome Charlotte and Aaron, who bring their son Maxwell for baptism. Bp Graeme will be conducting the baptism.
Next weekend Bp Graeme and I will both be away from the parish, leading the St Peter's Institute for Spiritual Studies retreat at Tarrawarra Abbey, a Cistercian monastery near Yarra Glen. The residential retreat is fully booked, but if you would like to attend for one day only you are most welcome on Saturday 30th April, from 9am to 5.30pm. The cost is $15 (concession $12) for the day only. To book a place please contact the Parish Office (ph: 9660 2391; e-mail: email@example.com). You can get to Tarrawarra Abbey (www.cistercian.org.au/visit-us.htm) by public transport, catching a train to Lilydale Station, and then McKenzie Bus No. 685 to Healesville via Yarra Glen. The monastery entrance is about 5km past Yarra Glen town. Ask the bus driver to stop at the monastery front entrance, and then walk up the dirt road for 1.5km to the guesthouse.
Looking ahead to the St Peter's Patronal Festival, on Wednesday 29th June, we will be celebrating the 170th Anniversary of the laying of our Foundation Stone by Governor Charles La Trobe. Bp Kay Goldsworthy has kindly agreed be our guest preacher for this historic occasion. If you would like to help on the Patronal Festival organising committee this year, please contact Sue Wuttke or myself.
It has been good to see a burst of new life at Evensong over the past six months, since we introduced the revised monthly 6pm format. This evening I will be preaching, the St Peter's choir will be leading our worship, and the service will conclude with Benediction. Do come!
Next month we launch a special Evensong preaching series at St Peter's: "Heroes of the Faith." Contributors to parishioner Roland Ashby's book of the same name will be speaking at Evensong in coming months about their faith heroes. Some dates for your diary:
